The Franklin County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program sets sail with a kick off party at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 7th at the Eastpoint branch. At the kick off parties, participants can learn and register for summer reading events followed by an ice cream social.

Both library branches will have fun activities for both kids and adults during the Summer Reading Program under the theme of “Adventure Begins At Your Library”, which will feature the outdoors. Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate. There will be reading logs, prizes and incentives for all ages (including adults) and performances by Animal Tales (https://www.animaledzoocation.com/) and Mr. Richard (https://mrrichard.net/about).

Now is a period of high solar activity. That’s what caused the recent outburst of the Northern Lights, and it could happen again soon. In 1989, a solar flare knocked out the power grid in Quebec for nine hours. In this high-tech age, solar flares have the potential for much greater damage.

“Eclipses, northern lights, sunspots: the Sun has been in the headlines a lot recently,” Randy says. “The Sun is the source of all energy on Earth. Solar heating, solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power, and even fossil fuels derive their energy from the Sun.”

Randy will describe how the Sun works, some strange facts, and how it constantly changes more than you might think. His past presentations at Pebble Hill have resulted in lots of questions and fun discussions. After the presentation we’ll go outside and observe the Sun through a telescope. Join us for a wonderful morning of painting with artist Suzanna Reese Winton. This class is designed as an introduction to the joys of watercolor painting, but all levels will benefit from Winton’s expert instruction. Winton has been painting in watercolor for 30 years and travels the US leading workshops and artist’s retreats in watercolor and oils. She is the author of "Realistic Watercolor Portraits" and has won countless regional and national awards and accolades for her works.

The focus of this class will be painting native birds and participants will have the choice of painting the beautiful indigo bunting or a stunning woodpecker. Winton will share her special techniques in capturing detail and her extreme talent for creating color recipes using a limited palette resulting in a stunning painting you will be proud to display in your home.

The class is from 9 a.m. to noon and will be held in the Learning Center. The fee is $65 and all supplies for the class will be provided for you. For an additional $10 fee, you will receive a voucher to tour the Main House and view the wildlife art collection, which includes 33 first edition John James Audubon prints of birds native to this region.

Join us as Randy and Debra Brienen return to LeMoyne Arts with ‘Forever Side by Side,’ their third exhibition featuring acrylic and oil works on canvas. In this exhibit, each artist uniquely interprets the same subject in their distinctive styles”.

The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Friday, June 21, from 8:00-10:00 pm in Carrabelle, FL with live music from Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising Strawberry Moon and evening sky.

Attendees are in for a treat as the exceptionally talented musicians, Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers, take center stage. The Rockulla Performers are made up of a variety of young talent that will be playing guitar and ukulele as well as singing an assortment of songs including some classic country tunes, timeless oldies, and more.

Visitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors will also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park. Bring a chair and enjoy the evening.

For those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. Advance tickets are strongly suggested as slots may sell out and can be purchased online at https://www.crookedriverlighthouse.com/full-moon-events/ or in the lighthouse gift shop.
