The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System warmly welcomes back returning artist Tom Mitas. In this exhibit, he showcases his collection of North American wildlife paintings, some of which won First Place awards at the Tallahassee Senior Center!

Artist biography: Tom Mitas moved to Tallahassee in 2005 after accepting a contract with the Florida Department of Health to develop computer software. He bought a home and fell in love with the community: the closeness and wide open spaces, the greenery, animals, seashore, and friends he made. Tom drew often as a teenager and young adult, even while in the US Marines, but as an adult, his children, family, and work took priority. He did some wood carving and began to paint a few years ago after his wife gifted him an easel. He took classes in Havana and at the Tallahassee Senior Center, becoming enamored with oil and acrylic painting. Several of his pieces won awards at the Tallahassee Senior Center and North Florida Fair.

This critter-centric exhibit will be on display at the Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library from December 31st, 2024 through January 31st, 2025.

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum’s Director Tiffany Baker and Director of Research and Programming Rachel Basan Porter will share some of the special stories related to Florida’s Capitol buildings. The presentation will feature their favorite images from the 2024 book Florida’s Historic Capitol Building. The program is free and open to the public.

Join the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System in celebrating National Sewing Month! Although typically observed throughout the month of September, we are kicking things off early this year with an exhibit of various items made by members of the American Sewing Guild of Tallahassee. This handmade collection will be on display at the Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library from August 13th through September 12th.

About the organization: The Tallahassee Chapter of the American Sewing Guild is made up of women who strive to advance sewing as an artform and life skill. Most of their time is spent volunteering for organizations such as Sleep in Heavenly Peace, 4-H, Tallahassee Police Department, assisted living facilities, and veterans programs. They also manage the Home Department of the annual North Florida Fair. For more information on the American Sewing Guild, visit their website at ASG.org.

Join Tallahassee Downtown and Tallahassee Film Festival for Movies in the Park the second Wednesday of each month! On August 14th we will be showing Shrek in Kleman Plaza starting at 8 PM for free. On a summer weekday, we will have the river mostly to ourselves. We will discuss local natural history and biodiversity of this world class first magnitude spring ecosystem. While we are at it, we will paddle with manatees, handle terrific turtles, and experience endless plants and animals. Bring your swimsuit, mask and snorkel. We will observe fossils from off the riverbed, and learn about the prehistory of our region. $60 per person cost includes expert guide, boat/safety gear, and extra beverages.
