A GOP push to ban most abortions after six weeks is growing increasingly contentious in Florida. This week, Democratic Party chairwoman Nikki Fried and Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book were arrested with a group of protesters who were advocating for access to abortion care. Earlier in the day Senate President Kathleen Passidomo cleared the chamber’s gallery after several outbursts from members of the public interrupted a floor debate on the bill. Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law this week a measure that would allow people to carry a concealed gun without a permit in Florida. It's set to take effect on July 1st. As Valerie Crowder reports, the measure received pushback from Democrats before it passed mid-way through the legislative session.

A measure aimed at curbing local ordinances that hurt private businesses is under consideration by the Legislature for a second year. As Margie Menzel explains, supporters say the bill would help small businesses, while opponents say it would shackle local governments’ ability to respond to the concerns of their residents.

The University of Florida, The University of Central Florida, The University of South Florida, and New College are among a growing list of schools putting forward similar restrictions.

Families of transgender children are distressed about the future as Florida lawmakers weigh more restrictions to gender-affirming care. The Senate passed a bill this week that would reinforce medical board rules that bar doctors from prescribing treatments like hormones for trans minors. Kids who started treatment before the rules went into effect can continue. But a house bill would require they stop by the end of the year. A mom from the Tampa Bay area - who asked not to be named - has a 13 year-old daughter who takes puberty blockers and eventually plans to take estrogen. If she was forced to go off her medication, her mom says it would devastate her physically and mentally. The single mom and her daughter are now grappling with the difficult choice of whether to move out of Florida. Parents and their teenage kids may not see eye to eye on much. But one thing they probably can agree on is young people don’t get enough sleep. As Gina Jordan reports, the Florida Legislature is trying to help by mandating later start times for school.
