Florida’s next legislative session officially starts in January. In the lead up to that, lawmakers are putting together their spending wish lists. Regan McCarthy reports Governor Ron DeSantis announced his budget proposal Thursday. Earlier in the week House Democrats gave their view on how they’d to prioritize state funds.

Politico’s Matt Dixon has been analyzing state budgets in Florida for many years. He shares his thoughts on Governor DeSantis’s proposed spending plan with Tom Flanigan.

After a holiday break, Florida lawmakers will have to jump into the redrawing of political boundaries for state legislative and congressional seats. The chore happens once a decade to accommodate population changes recorded by the census. During their last visit to Tallahassee this month, Florida House subcommittees workshopped their proposed maps for the first time, as Gina Jordan reports.

Most Floridians have access to high-speed internet. But many of the state’s rural residents can’t find providers to deliver internet fast enough to stream video, connect to virtual meetings or even complete homework assignments online. Hundreds of millions — and potentially billions — of dollars in federal funding are available to the state. But as Valerie Crowder reports, it could take a while before communities in rural areas have access.
