The Tallahassee Police Department has continued to use flock cameras on local roads after the governor ordered the license plate readers removed from state highways and many law enforcement agencies followed suit.
Now, Tallahassee City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow is saying TPD should drop its cameras as well.
In a memo sent to city leaders Matlow says TPD’s continued use of the tech puts it at odds with the state and other law enforcement agencies in the region:
He told WFSU he thinks it's confusing to everyday county residents.
“Most people think we're in Leon County, we're in the state that they're coming down, but they don't quite understand that TPD operates flock cameras on local roads as well. I think we just need to be unanimous in support with our county partners and our state partners, and take the stance and just take them down," he said.
Matlow made a motion to halt the use of Flock cameras that failed 2-3 at the commission’s last commission meeting. Now, he wants the commission to revisit that decision during its Sept. 9 meeting.
TPD previously made a statement that it will halt the use of the cameras on state roads, but are waiting for direction from the city commission before taking additional action. For WFSU News, I’m Tristan Wood.
