One in five women report having experienced rape, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Florida State University doctoral candidate Wayne Rivera says that means many people know a sexual assault survivor, whether they realize it not.

"The way I'm defining it at least, which includes friends and partners. Most people tend to know a victim. Maybe they disclose to them or not. But most people will tend to know a victim or survivor," Rivera said.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is encouraging people affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse to reach out to law enforcement. The move is part of a national push for awareness of victims’ rights.

The Leon County Jail officials say they’re meeting federal standards in fighting sexual assault behind bars. The Sheriff’s Office has been working on attaining certification for the past year.

UF Quarterback Suspended, Accused Of Sexual Assault

The University of Florida in Gainesville has suspended its football quarterback amid a sexual assault investigation.

Freshman quarterback Treon Harris has been suspended from the football team while authorities investigate sexual assault allegations against him. Harris has not been charged with a crime.

According to the University of Florida, Harris is accused of sexually assaulting a female student early Sunday in an on-campus residence hall. The incident occurred following the Gators win against Tennessee in Knoxville.
