Some graduate students at Florida State University say they’re being exploited because the university’s healthcare coverage for teaching and research assistants fails to adequately cover their costs. The group has been in negotiations with FSU since May over just how much their healthcare stipend should be.

Florida State University officials want to use a new designation to help the school increase its profile. FSU and the University of Florida are so-called “preeminent” schools, making them eligible for more state funding.

FSU President Eric Barron told the state university oversight board Wednesday that he wants to use the money to hire high-profile faculty members in the areas of science and technology.

Florida State University and the University of Florida can now add another distinction to the list.

The Florida Board of Governors approved the “preeminent university” status for FSU and UF in an unanimous vote Monday. Along with millions more in state funding for both schools, the University of Florida will be able to establish a program offering 4-year degrees entirely online.

Florida State University football player Gregory Dent is facing up to 15 years in prison after being charged with rape over the weekend.  Dent was released Monday on $15 thousand dollars bail.

According to court documents, the victim and Dent have been friends since high school. Saturday, she, Dent, and others went to a nightclub.  When they returned to Dent’s apartment, the victim says she fell asleep on Dent’s bed.

She then alleges she awoke to Dent kissing her, and tried to push him away.  But the victim alleges he continued trying to force himself upon her.

Florida State University is planning to increase its tuition rates. FSU Trustees approved the hikes despite dissenting votes from four members of the board including the student body president.

FSU Trustees approved an overall 1.7 percent cost of living increase that’s mandated in state law. FSU plans to use half of the money generated from the increase for financial aid. President Eric Barron says using the money for need based aid follows the spirit of the legislature’s tuition increase.

TampaBay.com and FAMU Athletics

Athletics directors at both Florida A & M and Florida State are out.

FAMU did not renew its contract with Derek Horne, largely because of the continued budget deficit in the athletics program. Horne has been placed on administrative leave with pay until his contract expires at the start of September.

FAMU’s athletics department has been plagued by a $7 million dollar deficit, incurred over several years.

Governor Rick Scott is urging Florida’s public university presidents to hold off on increasing tuition. Scott vetoed an overall 3-percent tuition hike as part of the budget, but there are questions as to whether universities can implement a smaller cost-of-living increase mandated in state law.

Leon County officials say the 2013 legislative session turned out well for the region. Schools, universities and state employees are all celebrating.

Local leaders met with state legislative delegates today on Tuesday to discuss how the laws and budgets passed this session will affect the local community.

Rep. Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee) said, this year’s budget includes pay raises for the thousands of state workers in the area, the first they’ve seen in seven years. And that should help boost the local economy.

The Florida Board of Governors has voted to move Florida State University's Palm Beach digital animation program back to the school's Tallahassee main campus.

The vote was almost unanimous, with one dissenting.

Longtime Florida State University administrator John Carnaghi has died. Carnaghi was a beloved member of the Tallahassee community and helped oversee a 22 year period of growth at FSU.

When John Carnaghi came to Florida State University in 1991, it was a far cry from the institution that exists today.

“The grounds weren’t clean. We didn’t have the kind of plants and flowers you see today. We didn’t have our accounts in order, there was no decent parking,” said former FSU President Sally D’Alemberte.

More Trouble For FSU Animation Program

Feb 13, 2013

Florida State University is facing more fall out stemming from their failed partnership with a bankrupt animation studio that left Florida taxpayers 20 million dollars in the hole. Emotions are running high between the Chancellor of the Florida Board of Governors and the program’s students over a proposal to move the program to Tallahassee.

Florida State University is trying to keep the doors open at its West Palm Beach Film School location, even though its partner production company has gone bankrupt.  The Digital Domain bankruptcy has left the state on the hook for millions, created increased scrutiny on Florida State and has left the fate of students in the program up in the air.

A news website that ranked two Tallahassee universities among America’s most dangerous college campuses has published an alternate list that doesn’t include either school. Business Insider made its new list after several schools on the list criticized the site’s grading methods.

The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Florida State University has been suspended.

The Fraternity's Executive Director David Beacham says the decision to suspend the fraternity follows, "confirmation of violations of the Fraternity's law, policies and principles as well as violations of the policies of Florida State University. The violations were related to a recent unauthorized social activity and included the misuse of alcohol."

Beacham made those comments in a statement issued September 12th.

On Sunday, August 19, Florida State University bid farewell to the man who started its Black Studies Program – and who inspired hundreds of students to spend their lives in pursuit of justice.

He was a world-renowned academic, minister and activist for racial equality.  But what Bill Jones did best was teach. He was down to earth – cooking for students, loaning them money to keep them in school.  Above all, said Doctor Billy Close, now an FSU professor himself, Jones taught them – regardless of color, gender or orientation – to conquer their doubts.

Florida State University's football team is banned from twitter. FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher has told his players they can't use their Twitter accounts for the rest of the year.

Fisher's move comes after some players tweeted objectionable material on their Twitter sites  including one that quoted rap lyrics about killing police officers.

Fisher says he views social media as a distraction during the football season and wants his players can be as focused as possible.

Feds call for FSU to pay back $3 million

Jul 25, 2012

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wants Florida State University to pay back $3 million.

The federal agency says the university officials didn’t properly oversee the grant money to make sure that its use complied with federal regulations.

A preliminary report issued by the Department says FSU left the compliance issues up to individual colleges, departments and principal investigators.

But the university says it disagrees with that assessment and is working to resolve the differences.

The NCAA’s sanctions against the Penn State football program over a sex abuse scandal are costing the school money, valuable football recruits, and wins.

Penn State’s former football Coach, the late Joe Paterno, held the record as the winningest coach Division I College football. But as part of an unprecedented penalty against the school, the NCAA vacated all of Paterno's wins from 1998 through 2011.

That means Former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden will now hold the top spot in the NCAA record book for the division.

Florida State University students can expect to pay about 13-percent more for their classes this year, and FAMU students can expect a 12-percent increase. But that’s not what the two schools wanted.  The increases are a compromise of sorts between members of the state board that oversees Florida’s public universities.  And over the course of a two-hour meeting Thursday, votes over tuition increases were all over the place.

Florida State University freshman John Holland was arrested Monday and charged with shoplifting from a sporting goods store in Omaha, Nebraska.

Holland started at designated hitter in both of Florida State's College World Series games.

According to Omaha police, he and his brother Steven Holland, 23, are suspected of changing the price tag on a shirt they wanted in an attempt to purchase the goods for a lower amount at a vendor tent across the street from TD Ameritrade Park, the site of the College World Series.

The difference in cost was $12.

Four years of budget cuts have led to faculty and staff layoffs and program closures. FSU President Eric Barron says it’s also led schools such as the University of North Texas, to pick off FSU faculty.

“And they realize they can give this person a $20,000  raise, something that would take them years to get at Florida, and still cut their budget. My budget keeps cutting to the extent that I can’t keep up. Hence, why I’m losing 50 [faculty] per year,” Barron said in a presentation to the Florida Board of Governors Tuesday.

Did you ever see the mid-80s movie “Children of the Corn”?

It was a Steven King story, so it was creepy and scary.  Much of the action involved homicidal young people who hid out in a big corn field.  But most cornfields are neither creepy or scary.

Agriculture is still Florida’s number two industry, right behind tourism.  And corn makes up a large part of the state’s farm production.  Some cutting-edge research is underway that could make corn even more of a cash crop. And that’s sparked the interest of aspiring food scientists.

Florida State University's Board of Trustees has approved the purchase of the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. FSU is the primary user of the financially-troubled facility. Under the deal, the University will lease the facility back to the city and county for a year.

The school will pay about $1.15 million for the center, and agreed to take on an additional $4 million of the facility’s debt. The City and County will contribute another $500,000 to settle a lawsuit that paves the way for FSU’s takeover.
