A proposal allowing guns to be carried on public college and university campuses is gaining steam in the legislature. While the bill applies to all public higher educations in Florida—One school, Florida State University—is dominating the conversation.

Florida State University Police have arrested two men suspected in a sexual assault that occurred early Sunday morning.

Florida State University is warning its employees to be aware of a scam targeting other universities across the country called the University Payroll E-mail Scam.

“And, in the case that we’ve seen recently, people have attempted to use e-mails that purport to be from the institutions, saying that you’ve received a raise and to confirm the raise, you need to login to the payroll system to confirm the raise,” said Brian Rue, FSU’s Associate Director of Information Security.

The two criminal justice panels of the Florida Legislature are slated to meet Tuesday to take up a number of issues from the state’s troubled prison agency to a gun bill allowing guns on campus.

Newly appointed Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julies Jones is expected to brief the Senate Criminal Justice Committee members about areas where the department is lacking and trying to improve.

Update 7:43 p.m.: Florida State University football quarterback Jameis Winston is trading in his college career for a professional paycheck, and he's leaving FSU with a lawsuit on its hands.

In a statement issued through his agency, Winston thanks the university and fans for making his time in Tallahassee, “the best time of my life.”

The FSU quarterback is widely considered a top draft pick. His only defeat in two seasons at Florida State came recently-- with a playoff loss to Oregon on New Year’s Day.

A Florida State University probe cleared Jameis Winston of code-of-conduct violations stemming from a 2012 sexual assault allegation. But the most recent development does not mean the quarterback’s legal troubles are over.

Tallahassee Regional Airport will soon be offering direct flights to South Florida as well as some additional flights to another top destination in the state.

Silver Airways is one of the three major airlines flying out of Tallahassee Regional Airport. And, in a TLH terminal Wednesday, the carrier’s spokeswoman Misty Pinson announced the new services.

Recent shootings around the country have left many reexamining police departments and policies. But they've also led to a renewed focus on personal protection with increased gun sales and a legislative proposal to allow guns on college campuses.

Florida State University President John Thrasher says his position has not changed since the recent filing of a bill allowing people to open carry on public college and university campuses. It’s the same bill Thrasher helped defeat in 2011 when he was a state senator.

In 2011, the testimony of Dr. Robert Cowie, a friend of Thrasher, also helped derail the bill. Just weeks before, Cowie’s daughter, FSU Student Ashley, had been accidentally shot by a rifle and killed at a frat house.

FSU has announced Sallie McRorie as interim provost after the departure of Garnett Stokes, who is leaving to assume the same job at the University of Missouri.

“Sally is obviously well-qualified and did an excellent job when she previously served as interim provost,” says FSU President John Thrasher. “She has a great record of academic leadership and a commitment to working with faculty across departments and colleges.”

Florida State University students are back in class after a shooting at the campus library injured three people. The tragedy has raised the same question asked after any school shooting – how could this happen? But  at Florida State, It’s also raised a stronger feeling of community and support.

Florida State University is back open—a day after a gunman opened fire at the school’s Strozier Library. As FSU tries to get back to normal, an investigation into the shooting continues.

In the hours after three people were shot at FSU’s Strozier library, people gathered on the campus in a prayer vigils and rallies to show their support for the university. FSU Sophomore Gillian Newman says the shooting has shaken the campus community.

The Associated Press is reporting the gunman who shot three people at Florida State University Thursday before he was killed may have been a lawyer who graduated from the school.

As the investigation continues, Governor Rick Scott says he expects many unanswered questions will be answered. For now, Scott asked the nation to “Pray for FSU.”

“I can’t imagine the concern that parents have right now all across our nation that have a student here at FSU,” said Scott, at a press conference Thursday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A law enforcement official says the gunman who shot three people at Florida State University before being killed by police was a lawyer who graduated from the school.

The official told The Associated Press that the shooter was Myron May, who graduated from Florida State before attending Texas Tech University's law school. The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to release the name.

Florida State University Provost Garnett Stokes is a finalist for the same job at the University of Missouri. The school is expected to name a new provost within a few weeks.

FSU Provost Garnett Stokes was among 11 candidates who interviewed for the FSU Presidency in September but she wasn’t a finalist for the job. Instead, it went to State Senator John Thrasher, who started this week. Stokes served as interim president during the transition and said she’d continue at FSU as provost under Thrasher’s leadership, last month.

Florida’s system oversight board has confirmed state Senator John Thrasher as Florida State University’s new president. But his appointment to head the second-largest public university in Florida still isn’t without controversy.

About 50 students are standing on the steps of the Westcott Building, protesting among other things,  John Thrasher’s confirmation as FSU’s new President.

It could be that it takes two apples per day to keep the doctor away. Florida State University researchers are using a clinical trial to look at how eating apples affects Type 2 diabetes. It’s a disease disproportionately affecting minorities. So the Tallahassee team is working to increase ethnic diversity among its participants.

Earlier this month, Florida State University officials temporarily suspended the campus’s chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha, or Pike, Fraternity following complaints of illegal drug use, sexual assault, and excessive alcohol use over the course of the Fall semester. A Florida State University Fraternity is under investigation for sexual assault.  Pi Kappa Alpha hosted a party October 10th where a student says she was raped.

Florida State University is more than 60 percent to its goal of raising a billion dollars by the year 2018.

The effort started under former President Eric Barron and to date, FSU has raised $610 million. FSU Vice President of Advancement Tom Jennings says that was done over the past few years amid the Great Recession.
