A surprise outcome in Florida’s democratic gubernatorial primary has Democrats hopeful to reclaim the governor’s mansion and wrest control from Republicans for the first time in 20 years. It also marks a strong shift to the left — and hopes rest with Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who could become the first black governor in Florida’s history.

Free college tuition was one rally cry of the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign. It drew accusations from the Vermont Senator’s critics that he’s a radical, and ardent backing from his supporters. But in Florida, at a recent Democrat Gubernatorial candidate forum, the idea had majority candidate support.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum’s gubernatorial bid is gathering momentum as he picks up top-tier endorsements and some honorable mentions by one of Florida’s leading pundits.

Gwen Graham, a former North Florida congresswoman and daughter of former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, officially announced her bid for governor on Tuesday, becoming the first major female candidate in a crowded field.

“I am so proud to announce I am running to serve as Florida's next governor,” she said.

Graham focused much of her speech on supporting public schools and criticized the state for grading public schools and focusing on standardized tests.

“As governor I will not just criticize this culture of teaching to the test: I will end high-stakes testing,” she vowed.

Gun control supporters aren’t too happy with how the week turned out. While some expressed their outrage over the U.S. Senate’s rejection of several bills, others have held demonstrations in response to the House’s lack of votes. But, they’re still holding out hope that something can be done on the federal level to help curb gun violence.
