A panel of Florida lawmakers grilled the head of Florida’s troubled prison system, before unanimously confirming her during a Senate hearing Thursday. Sascha Cordner reports.

Florida’s healthcare agency announcement Wednesday evening that negotiations with the federal government to extend a $2 billion dollar healthcare program had been discontinued. The news took lawmakers by surprise. The House and Senate are nearly 5-billion dollars apart in their budget plans and the Senate is relying on those talks to make its spending plan work. The omission of that information was noted by Georgetown University’s Joan Alker. Lynn Hatter spoke with Thursday.

After voting last month to end Florida’s 1970s era ban on gay adoption, Conservative Republicans in the Florida House sent a different message Thursday, Jim Ash reports. To the jeers of gay and lesbian parents, the Judiciary Committee agreed to give private adoption agencies the right to discriminate.

Finally on Capital Report, Greyhound advocates are raising concerns about the number of racing dogs found with cocaine in their system. While some trainers have been fined, other cases have been dragged on and eventually dropped. Regan McCarthy reports advocates says it’s one more reason greyhound racing should be stopped in Florida.
