(From the City Arts and Lectures archives) JOHN UPDIKE was a prolific and popular American novelist, poet, short story writer, and literary and art critic. Updike’s best known work is the “Harry ‘Rabbit’ Angstrom” series, including the novels “Rabbit, Run,” “Rabbit Redux,” “Rabbit is Rich” and the novella, “Rabbit Remembered.” John Updike published more than twenty novels during his lifetime. His literary and art criticism appeared regularly in “The New Yorker” and “The New York Review of Books.” Updike died in 2009. (Recorded in June 2006 at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco).
