Online scamming is reaching new levels of guile and sophistication. In response, Leon County hosted a free anti-scam seminar on Thursday, March 26 at the Leon County Main Library.

Nearly 100 people packed the library's program room to learn the latest tools to avoid becoming victims of skillful scammers. Some of those in attendance, like Mary Matthews, confessed to falling prey to internet fraudsters.

"I had been scammed for $10,000 out of my checking account. It was horrifying! And if it happens to you, don't react right away."

Agreeing with Matthews was Ivan Quinones, one of the presenters with the Cybersecurity Community Outreach Organization at Florida State University.

"The hackers always want you to act urgently before you have time to even think about it. It's important to take a second and think about what's happening before you take an action you might regret."

But scammers are always improving their tools and techniques. Leon County, which hosted the free seminar, plans to put the workshops online to reach more people.
