The possible takeover of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by Florida State University has sparked controversy. But Mayor John Dailey said the plan is nothing new.

"If you go back decades looking at the priorities of the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital board of directors, the second bullet on their priority list is the creation of a university-based healthcare system. This is nothing new. We've been talking about this in our community for decades!"

Dailey made that remark at the Network of Entrepreneurs and Business Advocates meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Capital City Country Club. Community members have raised concerns about a potential sale of THAT property as well. Dailey insisted they have nothing to worry about.

"Regardless of whether the sale goes through or not, it's going to remain a golf course. Regardless of whether the sale goes through or not, we have got to do our due diligence and step up to the plate and make sure that we properly recognize those that are buried out on the golf course and honor those who have been buried out there as well."

The unmarked graves of former enslaved people have been found on the property.

Dailey, who's not seeking a third term as mayor, also said he supports the city foreclosing on the abandoned Washington Square development site downtown.
