Leon County’s Children’s Services Council is expanding the programs it supports to include year-round offerings.

The council is spending a total of $2.5 million for both year-round and summer programs. That money comes from an additional property tax approved by voters.

For three years, the Children’s Services Council has funded summer enrichment programs.

Holly McPhail, the CSC’s director of special projects, says the council is expanding to year-round programs to give families access to the resources, services and opportunities they need.

“This will really help support families and their children in reaching school success and very specific outcomes,” she said.

She says the expansion will help support families and their children in achieving success.

“In addition to that, though, we recognize that there is greater need during the summertime, so we are still offering summer-only programs," she said. "So, during the summer there will be 13 programs -- but really the true investment that we’re excited about is the 7 year-round programs.”

Families can sign up for free and low-cost after-school programs, summer camps and family services at the Expo later this month.
