Gadsden’s legislative delegation meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 24th. The county is asking the state Legislature for approximately $50 million to address infrastructure, education, and public safety in the area.
But Quincy Commissioner Robin Wood said during Tuesday’s commission meeting, that the county never asked her about needing to make a funding request.
“The commission should not be the last to know about our legislative priorities," said Wood. "The county does not drive the city commission; the city commission should be driving itself."
The deadline to submit any local funding priorities was last Thursday. Commissioners say they learned about the deadline afterward.
The town manager scrambled to send a list to the Legislature, without the city commission’s review.
Wood blames the county for not communicating about the deadline. The board is also considering hiring an employee to help them keep track in the future.
“We have to do better about communicating," Wood said. "When these had to go in on Thursday, we should’ve known because what if we wanted priority 4 to go in there, instead of priority 1.”
Gadsden’s legislative delegation meeting will be held in Quincy. It starts at 10 a.m. inside the commission chamber.
