Thursday, September 12 marked a celebration of the United Way of the Big Bend and its 81 years of helping people in the 8-county area in and around Tallahassee. The organization also honored its many community partners.

One of those partners has been Capital City businessman Ken Boutwell. He received the United Way's Legacy Award.

"I'm even more appreciative of being part of the United Way of the Big Bend that year, after year, after year, brings us together to help one another," he remarked.

The effort, said United Way President and CEO Berneice Cox, has reached a lot of people over the past 5 years.

"We have served over 72,000 children, individuals and families in the areas of housing, early learning and education, skills development, health and mental health and safety net."

More than 400 business, government and community organization leaders attended the campaign kickoff luncheon at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
