A mailer sent out by Leon County School Board member Laurie Lawson Cox's reelection campaign discussing her 30 years of classroom teaching experience.

The latest reelection campaign mailer from Leon County School Board member Laurie Lawson Cox has hit mailboxes. WFSU factchecked it.

Cox’s mailer is focused on talking about her more than 30 years of classroom teaching experience. The message of the mailer is partially true. Cox held a teaching certificate and is the only candidate who has taught in the Leon County school system. She worked for several years as a physical education teacher at Roberts Elementary School.

Her challenger, Jeremy Rogers, runs several Pre-K and instructive programs through his business Killearn Sunshine Academy. Whiles Rogers does not hold a teaching certificate, he says he has taught pre-K and summer camp classes at his business and non-profit.

However, if her mailer was a school project, it may have lost some points. It includes a prominent typo.

The bolded lines at the top of the mailer reads “vote for the only candidate with experience” but repeats the word for twice.

Despite her teaching experience, she is not being backed by the local teachers’ union.

Rogers has received an endorsement from the Leon County Teachers Association. He has also been backed by the Leon County Democratic Party, who has criticized Cox since she was first elected in 2022 for being the preferred candidate of the local chapter of the conservative parent group Mom’s for Liberty.
