The Gadsden County School District is moving forward with plans to build a new K-8 school in Quincy.
The decision to move ahead comes after months of uncertainty between both the City of Quincy and the school board about where the facility should be built.
"We’ll move forward, and I’ll have the conversation with the city manager so we can get our hardhats and shovels and get this project to rolling," Superintendent Elijah Key said at a recent board meeting.
Quincy’s new K-8 school will go where James A. Shanks Middle School is located. The new development will combine students from Shanks Middle School, Stewart Street Elementary, and George W. Munroe—three aging campuses in Quincy.
“I think everybody on this board is committed to the students of Gadsden County and committed to ensuring that our facilities are the very best," said Key.
The entire project is expected to cost $60 million. The school board has received over $35 million of the funding to cover costs from the state legislature and expects to receive the rest this fall.
The project is slated to be complete in 2026.
