This is Wood’s third campaign for the school board. She was the principal of SAIL High School for 32 years and calls herself “an unrelenting advocate for the most vulnerable kids.”
“I would say we’re under a little bit of a strange time right now, when it comes to respect for public schools," she says. "We have people who think we’re teaching things that we’re not, and, I’m afraid, going off into little silos. And the important thing about public schools is it’s the bedrock of our democracy.”
She says public schools are where youngsters can meet people from different cultures, different backgrounds and different classes.
"And it helps you as a child, as a young person, understand everyone’s not like you," she says. "And it helps you broaden your thinking.”
Wood was first elected to the school board in 2016 with 75 percent of the vote. She was unopposed in her 2020 run. This year she has an opponent: Daniel Zeruto, who filed last month.
