Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor wants the Children’s Services Council to reconsider a move that could lower the amount of revenue it receives for new programs.
The council wants to lower the millage rate it charges. That money supports community-based programs for kids. But Proctor says the potential reductions in revenue will hurt future programs that are geared toward at-risk kids and low-income families.
“The public had a lot of fanfare about the children’s service council, but people need to know they aren’t doing right," said Proctor at Tuesday's press conference.
"They are not thinking right. They are not going in the right direction. That’s what makes this important.”
The CSC was created by taxpayers and uses a portion of property taxes to support programs for low-income children and families.
Currently, Leon County residents are currently paying 37.5 cents per $1,000 in taxable property value. The council will decide whether to reduce that number to 34.77 cents after this Thursday's public hearing.
