Since 1915, small off-post training facilities like the one located in Tallahassee have played a vital role in ensuring members of the military are ready for duty.

Navy Reserve Centers (NRC) are scattered across the country and are typically run by a group of full-time Navy Sailors. They handle everything from logistics and administrative needs, to combat training for reservists.

“It looks like about 100 selected reserve sailors that would be processing through this NRC," said Navy Public Affairs Officer Robert Myers.

"It’s a staff of 10 and they help with the administrative functions for sailors. They take care of the sailors through basically pay personnel, logistics, and medical."

Number of reserve centers in Florida are shrinking?
Three years ago, the Navy began moving staff from stand-alone Reserve Centers onto permanent naval bases like the ones in Jacksonville and Pensacola.

Myers says the move will ensure all sailors across the country are better trained and get the support they need.

“Since these were off installation, we’re now relocating and moving these personnel to on installation facilities which would better help us be more efficient and effectively execute our mission,” explained Myers.

Tallahassee’s Reserve Center is scheduled to close in September of 2024. It’s unclear what will happen with the state’s six remaining centers.
