The woman widely known as "The Mother of Tallahassee's Southside" was honored by an act of congress on Saturday. More than 100 people attended the renaming of Tallahassee's Main Post Office on South Adams Street after D. Edwina Stephens. One of those who knew Edwina Stephens best was longtime collegue and friend Deloris Harpool.
"Renaming of this federal facility in her honor is richly deserved and undeniably righteous!"
And being a federal facility, the renaming took a literal act of congress. Which is why the area's Congressman Neal Dunn was on hand. Although he gave full credit to the guy who made it happen.
"I also want to thank my friend, former Congressman Al Lawson, who actually filed the bill to change the name." (applause)
A professional nurse by trade, Stephens also nursed her beloved Southside to better health by relentlessly pushing local government officials to improve the community and the lives of its residents. D. Edwina Stephens died in 2011 following a traffic accident at the age of 86.
