After 5 years of planning, a new neighborhood will soon rise on Tallahassee’s South Side. The new Purpose Built community concept replaces what had been the old run-down Orange Avenue apartment complex.
Tuesday’s gala groundbreaking included city and county officials. Most notably Tallahassee Housing Authority Executive Director Brenda Williams who’s been pushing the project since the very beginning.
“Phase 1 will consist of 130 apartments. Phase 2 will consist of 160 apartments for a total of 290 apartments.”
Each one, she added, will have features and amenities the old complex’s residents couldn’t have dreamed of. And those folks, she said, would have first right of refusal for the new units.
“We are looking forward to bringing back all of the former residents that were here at the site prior to demolition.”
Based on other Purpose Built communities in cities like Atlanta and Orlando, Tallahassee’s version should be ready to welcome its first occupants by the end of 2024.
