Mark Weitzman Redefines Anti-Semitism at Temple Israel Talk

As more anti-Semitic incidents happen in the United States and elsewhere, an expert on the subject is coming to Tallahassee. He’ll redefine the term this Tuesday evening at Temple Israel during a presentation sponsored by the Holocaust Education Resource Council and supporting partners.

Mark Weitzman is with the Simon Wiesenthal Center, headquartered in Los Angeles. He said one of the greatest barriers to reducing the scourge of anti-Semitism is the indifference of those who say, “I’m not Jewish, so this doesn’t affect me.”

“Societies where anti-Semitism or racism has peaked are not healthy societies,” he asserted during a telephone interview prior to his Tallahassee visit. “You can go on and on, but it clearly says something about society and our attitudes when we allow these things to continue unchallenged.”

Weitzman is now challenging these attitudes and acts with a new definition of anti-Semitism, which takes into account its modern as well as historic manifestations. Weitzman’s Temple Israel talk begins at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. His appearance is supported by the Tallahassee Jewish Federation and Florida Holocaust Museum.
