Leon County Celebrates Arbor Day at Martha Wellman Park

Tom Flanigan

Leon County marked Arbor Day on Saturday, Jan. 25 with a community tree-planting at Martha Wellman Park. Volunteers planted hundreds of trees around the park’s large pond.

A county-supplied digger helped speed the tree planting and among the some 100 people doing the planting were members of the FSU Biology Club, including Amanda Kaufmann and her pal Helena Bazemore.

"Well, today's Arbor Day and we just wanted to make a difference and plant some trees for the environment. And it's a nice day out here," Bazemore grinned.

Also on hand was Sustainable Tallahassee’s Steve Urse who noted the site of the planting was appropriate, given the park’s was named in honor of Martha Wellman.

"She was part of the environmental and economic consensus group that came up with Blueprint," he explained. "This was a super thing for the county to do to name this park after her many years ago."

The park, near the corner of Highway 90 and Capital Circle Northwest, is now one of the area’s most diverse places for plants and wildlife.
