Second Harvest of the Big Bend is ramping up donations this holiday season for Hurricane Michael affected areas. Second Harvest is one of the largest food pantries in Florida.

Last September, WFSU reported on a food giveaway in Jackson County. It’s an area still recovering from Hurricane Michael. But, it’s not the only one.

“You know Gulf County comes to mind just simply because the partner agencies that we work with there were destroyed in the Hurricane,” says Second Harvest of the Big Bend’s Shari Hubbard.

Gulf County has only one partner to help coordinate food giveaways. Partners can be churches, soup kitchens, shelters, and more. However, Gulf County doesn’t have enough of these partners, so Second Harvest has had to do direct distributions. Hubbard explains:

“We announce that we’re going to be there within the community and word spreads and people come out and get food.”

Hubbard says, Second Harvest broke records on how many food distributions it made last year, and she expects more will be broken in 2020.
