Frenchtown Forum Focuses on Growth and Jobs

Tom Flanigan

A lively forum on Tallahassee's big issues took place the night of Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Bethel Family Life Center in Frenchtown. Much of the discussion focused on the challenges facing the city's low income residents.

There were impassioned pleas for government help: “We’ve been talking about traffic and jobs; that’s two things,” exclaimed one attendee. “There are several more. Housing is a good one!”

There were also pleas for residents to get more involved in bettering their lives.

“If you come with complaints and groans and moans,” remarked one woman, “Bring a solution!”

Retiree Bernie Jordan was among the several dozen who attended the forum.

“We’re growing and when you’re growing, you have pain,” he said after the session. “And that’s what we’re going through; growing pains.”

And Mayor John Dailey, one of the forum panelists, gave a bright vision for the future.

“We’re focused. We’re putting together a strategic plan. You’re going to see amazing things coming out of the City of Tallahassee,” he insisted.

Other panelists were Curtis Taylor from the Tallahassee Urban League, Katrina Tuggerson from the Capital City Chamber of Commerce, Adner Marcelin from the Tallahassee Chapter of the NAACP and Miaisha Mitchell from the Frenchtown Revitalization Council. The discussion was hosted by the National Action Network.
