Longest Table A Hurricane Recovery Reunion

Tom Flanigan

Just days after a major hurricane pounded the city, about 1,000 people turned out for a community meal that stretched for two downtown blocks along Tallahassee's Duval Street Sunday evening (10/14).

A song about a beautiful day playing in the background seemed an apt sentiment for this Longest Table event. Among the many hundreds who came, 850 Magazine Editor Linda Kleindienst.

"Just to see everyone gathered, it's nice to just join with people and chat about our community and the strengths that we have," she remarked.

Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna saw it as a community-wide team building exercise.

"We put all of our differences aside and showed how special Tallahassee and Leon County is that we can rebuild our city in a matter of days!" Hanna exclaimed.

The Village Square's Barby Moro saw the recent storm tragedy forging common bonds.

"I think that a lot of people felt that loss as one and so as one we want to help each other through it and I think this is just one of the ways we can do it by coming together."

Now the Capital City is switching its focus to helping other storm tossed towns further west.
