Part of Tallahassee’s proposed Cascades development would mean clear-cutting for a heavily wooded block of land between Gaines and Bloxham streets.
Preservationists were touring the site today (Friday, 3/2) and hope to rally more support to save the trees. The walking tour began at Cascades Park, then up to the block bordered by Gadsden and Calhoun streets. In between the trees, including several massive live oaks, was a small parking area for state workers. Ann Bidlingmaier, who founded Tallahassee Tree Watch many years ago, thought it would be tragic to turn this oasis of green into an apartment building.
“This to me is Tallahassee. The trees, the landscape, the hills, the azaleas, and this is what Tallahassee’s all about and if we level this and put in high rises, we’re going to be taking away a major character feature of this area,” she insisted.
Bidlingmaier and other group members plan either to hold a public rally to garner more support for their cause, or make their plea at an upcoming City Commission meeting.
