Tallahassee's joint city/county Community Development Agency has given a final "yes" vote to a massive new development along the north border of Cascades Park. Construction could get underway in about six months.
CRA Board Member and Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor had been a consistent nay-sayer on the project until Monday (9/26).
"I voted against this previously and I'm trying to find reasons to support it today," he told his board colleagues.
Proctor got his reasons and then came the unanimous approval vote. City Commissioner Nancy Miller was among those expressing relief.
"I'd like to say this; this is probably the last of 283 votes that we've taken and I'm so excited that we have now kicked it out the door," she quipped.
Now Shaun McIntyre with the developer North American Properties says the real work can begin.
"It'll probably be about April of next year, maybe sooner depending on our contract (that) does allow certain work to be done before our closing and then it will take us about 30 months to build it and we're looking to a November, 2020 opening."
New artist renderings show a hotel, apartment complex and retail stores in the Cascades project.
