Snow, sleet and freezing rain fell across parts of North Florida Wednesday morning closing roads, schools, universities and colleges in North Florida and South Georgia. In Tallahassee snow fell in some parts of town for about an hour.
Parts of Interstate 10, and Highways 90 and 27 were closed and outgoing flights from the Tallahassee airport were canceled. Schools in Leon, Gadsden and Jefferson County schools were also shuttered. Wednesday was to be the first day back for students. Ten-year-old Ava Alarco enjoyed her day off of school. Before Wednesday, she had only seen snow once in her life, while on vacation in Chicago.
“I was excited and happy because I have never seen it actually snow before, like actual snow falling down, so it was pretty cool," said.
The last measurable snowfall in Tallahassee happened in 1989. Temperatures are expected to again dip into the 20s overnight through the rest of the week, but the snow days are over for now.
Public schools in Leon, Gadsden and Jefferson counties along with Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College should reopen Thursday.
The winter storm impacted much of Florida's Big Bend region, along with Tift, Colquitt and Thomas Counties in Georgia.
