A second candidate for the Tallahassee City Commission seat being vacated by Nancy Miller officially launched his campaign on Saturday, Dec. 16.
Jeremy Matlow said he'll push for a city government that's more responsive to the politically unconnected. Matlow, the founder of Gaines Street Pies, is now a successful business owner. But he said his Southside upbringing was anything but affluent. Now he thinks it's time to give back.
"I've lived in Tallahassee all my life and I grew up here and it can be such a better city," he asserted. "So why not? We all need to step up and do our civic duty."
At Saturday's campaign kickoff at the Garages on Gaines, he promised to make City Hall more open to people from all backgrounds and income levels.
"We need to show up at City Hall in force and let them know that the needs of our community will no longer be ignored and we need to open our pockets and support candidates that are refusing to be bought and influenced by big money donors," he told the crowd, which responded with enthusiasm.
So far, Matlow and Kearney Center food service Manager Bill Schack are the only two candidates to file for the job Miller has held since 2010.
