New Air Connection Coming Between Florida's and Nation's Capitals

Tom Flanigan

For years, those using Tallahassee’s airport have wished for direct service to Fort Lauderdale, New York City and Washington. Soon, said City Commissioner Scott Maddox on Monday (10/30), one of those wishes will come true.

“Today I am pleased to announce that American Airlines will be offering twice daily direct flights into Washington Reagan National Airport.”

Starting February 16, Maddox said a flight will depart Tallahassee at 7:10 a.m. daily and return at 9:57 each evening. Tallahassee Chamber President and CEO Sue Dick sees it as a way to further grow local air traffic, thus making further service expansion more likely.

“Our commitment from the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce is to work with our partners at the Office of Economic Vitality to do what we can to make sure that these flights stay full and encourage our citizens to use this airport.”

In a written statement, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum said:

“This new air service is a tremendous step forward for our airport and the regional customers we support around North Florida. The ability to move seamlessly between Florida’s capital and the nation’s capital is extremely advantageous for our community, as we work to created new and dynamic economic opportunities to Tallahassee.”

American Airlines said its service between Tallahassee and Washington will be provided by 76 seat regional jets.
