There’s a new Sheriff in town. Walt McNeil was sworn in as Leon County's Sheriff Tuesday.
Second Circuit Chief Judge Jonathan Sjostrom administered the oath of office to McNeil.
“Congratulations,” Sjostrom said, to McNeil. “What a privilege.”
He says he wants to address the causes of crime in the county as well as the crimes themselves.
“When 60 to 70 percent of the people on the Southside of Leon County at or below the poverty level, that is not acceptable for a county of our size and our significance in the state of Florida,” McNeil said, to applause.
While other officials had a joint swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning, the Leon County Sheriff’s office hosted a separate event for McNeil in the afternoon at the Florida State Conference Center.
