Leon County School District Kicks Off Hiring Spree

Kate Payne/WFSU

The Leon County School District is hiring more than 200 new teachers to replace this year’s retirees. WFSU News visited a county-wide job fair Thursday.

At the Chiles High gymnasium, dozens of tables are set up for the district’s elementary schools, each decorated with school colors and mascots. Interviewees move from one table to the next, meeting with principals and administrators. Some of the lucky applicants are hired on the spot, like Anna Krug. She interned at W.T. Moore Elementary, and starting this fall she’ll be teaching first grade.

“The teachers who were on the team kind of saw me teaching and heard me teaching and they just really liked me. They thought I did a really good job and was effective and all those kinds of things,” she said.

There are openings for teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade, and a big need for science and special education instructors. The district filled more than 60 positions Thursday.
