Last year, Leon County Schools District Administrator Rocky Hanna announced that he would resign from his position to run for Superintendent. Yesterday was his last day working for the district.
On May 13th, Hanna filed his letter of resignation. He believes there are serious problems with how school funds are being allocated.
Hanna says, “Our Title I dollars I believe are mismanaged. We’re top-heavy in Title I, we have a lot of administrative fees. I’ve heard of Title I kindergarten classes with 20 or 21 students. In a Title I school, that’s unacceptable."
He says many administrative departments should be consolidated to free up funds for classrooms. Hanna is also critical of the salaries paid to top level administrators, which range from 90 thousand to 135 thousand dollars. Those have gone up in the past year.
Florida’s “Resign to Run” statute requires subordinate officers to step down when running for a position if their supervising officer is looking to be reelected. The former Leon high school principal is running against Tallahassee City Commissioner Scott Maddox, private investigator Michael Wynn, Reverend Patricia Sunday, and incumbent Jackie Pons, who has been in office since 2006.
