The Invest Health Initiative is awarding community development grants to teams in 50 cities across the country. A group of Tallahassee leaders has won $60,000.

A five-person team in Tallahassee is developing ideas for projects like community gardens and more pedestrian-friendly roads in lower income areas.

“It’s access to recreation, it’s safe, affordable housing, and public safety, as well as access to food. It’s a holistic approach," says team member Michael Parker.

They have lofty goals for the 18 month program, but  Parker is confident their plans will have a lasting effect. Before making a concrete strategy, the local leaders will attend training sessions with the Initiative advisors as well as the leaders of other cities.
