Leon County is pushing to get more travel options. In addition to a massive campaign to lure air carrier Jet Blue to the area, the city is also trying to get Amtrak to come back.
Even before Hurricane Katrina, the Sunset limited temporarily stopped service to Tallahassee because of an accident in Mississippi. But then it came back to serve the New Orleans to Jacksonville route. The service stopped completely after Katrina damaged the tracks in 2005.
Now local officials are pushing to get the passenger service line back. Amtrak will run a one-time train across the route to gauge local interest in service revival. The train will stop in Tallahassee on February 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the historical railroad depot.
City and county officials plan to hop on board, and they’re encouraging residents to come out and show support for the line. The push comes as the city and county have launched a massive marketing campaign to increase travel and services at the Tallahassee airport. Travelers into and out of the city have long complained about the lack of options at the airport and difficulty flying into Tallahassee.
