The Leon County School Board will take up a proposed budget for the upcoming school year today.

The budget proposal accounts for an increase in teachers’ salaries by 4 percent and other employees’ salaries by  3  percent.

The district will see its health insurance costs rise by $900,000. In Addition, the board's chief financial officer, Merrill Wimberley, says the settlement with BP over the gulf oil spill will help balance the budget.

“It appears that the board and the superintendent based on discussion the other night, would prefer to keep it in the fund balance and not designate it for use of something else,” Wimberley says.

The budget proposes a property tax decrease.
