Florida A&M University has a new athletics director. The University of Alabama’s Milton Overton is the fourth person to fill the position since president Elmira Mangum was chosen to lead the school last year.
Mangum’s first choice, NFL Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, angered students and alumni with his blunt style and heavy-handed treatment of athletes and colleagues. He resigned in December.
Nelson Townsend then took over as FAMU began searching for a new athletics director, but died earlier this year. And current interim Athletics Director Earl Robinson was not considered for the permanent job. That position now goes to Milton Overton of the University of Alabama.
Overton comes to FAMU as the athletics department continues to struggle with recurring deficits, and five teams that are on academic probation. In a statement announcing the hire, FAMU President Mangum says Overton, “comes to us with a wealth of knowledge, best practices, and a business acumen that will forge a new tomorrow for FAMU.”
