New FAMU AD Winslow Begins Revamp Of 'Broken' Department With Cuts To Golf, Tennis

Donald DeBevoise

Florida A&M University plans to suspend its men’s golf and tennis programs in an effort to rein in a recurring budget deficit.

The move comes at the direction of the university’s new Athletics Director, Kellen Winslow, who, in a statement from the university, says “the current financial situation of the athletics department makes it imperative” to cut the programs. At many colleges and university’s athletics is responsible for raising its own money.

According to a report delivered earlier in the month to FAMU’s board of trustees, the department is expected to be $1.25 million over budget. The cut to the men’s golf and tennis programs follows a decision two years ago to cut the school’s swimming and diving teams.

Students who received scholarships for golf and tennis will be able to retain them.

Earlier this week, Winslow reportedly told a support organization for FAMU’s football team that the athletics department is broken, and that it needs to be completely overhauled.
