Online Crime Mapping Might Need An Upgrade

Several law enforcement agencies are offering online crime mapping.

Citizens can use online crime mapping to locate 15 different types of crime in Leon County. The tool is offered by several law enforcement agencies. But, departments have the information on different websites rather than all in one place.

Florida State University’s Deputy Chief of Police James Russell says he wouldn’t be opposed to a one-stop shop for county residents, but he knows there are some hurdles involved.

“Right now, have we talked and sat down and talk about doing that?  Not that I’m aware of, but I’m a person that likes to vet out ideas and stuff,” says Russell.

Russell says financial obligations for maintaining the database could present a challenge.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office recently unveiled its crime mapping system, available on its website. And the Tallahassee Police Department keeps its statistics on talgov.com. Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement annually surveys law enforcement agencies across the state--however, reporting is voluntary.
