The Leon County Commission won’t be attending a town hall meeting tonight on the Southside.  One county commissioner is objecting to the format of the meeting.

Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor objects to the format of the town hall meeting. He told the Tallahassee Democrat he believes the structure of the meeting won’t allow enough public comment from the district he represents. An announcement about the County Commission’s withdrawal from the meeting came in the form of an alert from the county citing a scheduling conflict and, “deference to concerns addressed by the District County Commissioner."

A call to Proctor was not returned.

The meeting is still expected to happen this evening at 6 p.m. at Bethel AME Church on Orange Avenue. It’s hosted by the local civic organization, The Village Square.

Topics to be discussed include health, safety, housing and economic development. There will also be information on current programs and future plans for the neighborhood—including a proposal to the federal government to establish a so-called “promise zone” on the Southside. The promise zone is a federal initiative that pairs local business and community leaders to make investments in under-served areas.
