Firefighters Urge Caution This Season

Regan McCarthy

The holiday season is typically a peak season for house fires. Tallahassee Firefighters are giving residents a visual reminder of the danger with a lighted holiday display.

Firefighters have covered a wreath with 50 green bulbs. For each house fire this season they’ll replace a green light with a red one. Fire Department Spokesman, Mike Bellamy says since the program started five years ago, officials have seen steady declines in the number of local fires.

“We have thousands of people who come through Dorothy B. Oven Park this time of year to check out the amazing light show. They have a sign here that talks about the program and they see that home fires do occur. It’s a real occurring thing. I think a lot of us are in denial about fire and how devastating it can be,” Bellamy says.

In 2010, local firefighters recorded 41 residential fires. That number dropped to 16 in 2013. Bellamy warns holiday cooking is one of the main causes of residential fires. He says Christmas decorations, trees and candles are also frequently to blame.
