Florida State University student groups are hoping to get the state Board of Governors to block the presidential confirmation of state Sen. John Thrasher (R-St. Augustine). The groups and several faculty members have protested at every step of the search process this year, at one point leading to the resignation of the school’s original search consultant.

Members of the FSU Progress Coalition and Students for a Democratic Society marched last week to the university’s Board of Trustees meeting, chanting, "Hey, hey! Ho, ho! John Thrasher’s got to go!” Now, even though the trustees have made their selection, Progress Coalition Co-President Jerry Funt says unhappy students and faculty aren’t giving up.

"I think it’s important that people know that just because John Thrasher was chosen by the Board of Trustees to be president doesn’t mean that the fight’s over," Funt says.

The groups are hosting a town hall meeting in the school’s English department building Thursday evening to plan further protests and how to best ask the Board of Governors to reject Thrasher when its votes next month.
