Florida State University has backslid slightly in its quest to break into the highest national university rankings.
U.S. News and World Report has released its latest list of top schools. Florida State slid three places to number 43 among all public universities. It’s been trying to break into the Top 25 schools on the list for some years now. In a release, FSU downplayed the slide, with interim President Garnett Stokes saying, “long-term investments we are making should be reflected in the U.S. News & World Report rankings in the coming years.”
Florida State is sharing the No. 43 spot with North Carolina State University. When private schools are added, FSU sits at number 95.
Meanwhile, Florida A&M University also received a top rating in a separate category. FAMU falls under a separate ranking for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. US News has named FAMU as the top public HBCU, and number 8 HBCU when private institutions are included.
The University of Florida continues to be highly-rated at number 14 among public institutions and is also trying to climb higher in the rankings. The Florida Legislature has declared FSU and UF as so-called “preeminent” universities—a designation created that gives them extra funding.
