Tallahassee officials have confirmed the redevelopment of a second large property along North Monroe Street. A Boca Raton-based developer has its eyes on an Albertson’s supermarket, vacated long ago.
Largely a result of a messy company reorganization and mounting pressure from competitors like Publix, grocery chain Albertson’s was essentially crowded out of the Florida market in the early 2000s. Tallahassee lost its last Albertson’s in 2005 with the closure of a North Monroe Street location.
Now, 10 years after the last store shuttered, Tallahassee redevelopment officials are announcing potential plans to renovate the ailing structure.
In a statement e-mailed Monday, City Administrator Russell Snyder says, “The amendment will go to the Planning Commission on July 1st and to the City Commission on July 9th for final approval.”
Developer JASAN hasn’t revealed any final plans for the nearly 60,000-square-foot space, but ideas range from retail stores to community service space to so-called “indoor amusement.”
This project comes on the heels of a similar redevelopment announcement last week regarding the Tallahassee Mall.
