Another Tallahassee homeless shelter is closing its doors. The Haven of Rest shelter on West Tennessee Street will shut down this weekend. The announcement comes just a few months after United Way of the Big Bend announced The Shelter, a few blocks east, would be replaced by other transient housing. The Haven of Rest closing will mean no place to stay for about a hundred homeless men. Members of the Big Bend Homeless Coalition held an emergency meeting Thursday to explore accommodation options. Coalition Executive Director Susan Pourciau said the challenge is to replace, not only the Haven’s emergency shelter, but also the other housing services the organization provided. The Haven of Rest has been operating for a quarter of a century under the auspices of North Florida Baptist Church. Church leaders say they simply didn’t have the resources to keep the shelter going any longer.
