Flu Season Is Underway

Officials have confirmed the death of a Wakulla County resident, who is the first in the area to die from flu related complications this season.

Officials recommend that people get flu shots annually in order to protect themselves from what can be a nasty and sometimes deadly illness. Padraic Juarez is the administrator for the Wakulla County health department. He said there are some people who are especially at risk of complications from the flu.

“The people in the higher risk category are pregnant women. Children younger than 5, but older than 2-years-old, people who are over 50 years old, that includes myself, people with certain chronic medical conditions that includes diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, asthma,” Juarez said.

The Wakulla County Health Department is offering flu shot clinics starting Friday for $25. Leon County is also offering clinics with shots for $22. The next one is scheduled for Tuesday. And officials remind citizens flu shots are also regularly available through doctors' offices and pharmacies.
