A new effort to get fathers involved in breastfeeding is underway in Florida. Goliath Davis, IV is the Executive Director for Citizens for A Sustainable Future, a group that seeks to focus on issues facing the African American Community and one of several Florida organizations joining the breastfeeding awareness effort.
He says one thing fathers can do is read up on the benefits of breastfeeding, and staying away from things, like baby formula.
“It’s probably a good idea to put the most optimal food in your body. So as it absorbs those nutrients and rebuilds its cells from that, it has all the nutrients and best fuel it needs. You know, you wouldn’t put diesel in a gasoline car or vice versa,” said Davis.
Research shows that 39-percent of Florida's children born in 2008 were breastfed for the first six months of their lives, with only 20-percent breast fed for a year. That’s less than the two years recommended by the World Health Organization as well as the American Pediatric Association. August is recognized as World Breastfeeding Month.
